Nor’easters sink Lady Mariners in season opener
Castine, Maine - Senior midfielder Ali Trafton (Manchester, ME) scored twice on the day leading UNE to the 5-0 victory over Maine Maritime Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field. The Nor’easters outshot MMA 42 to 1 and controlled play in which was both team’s season opener.
The Nor’easters took the 1-0 when Trafton scored from Karina Scavo (Mt. Sinai, NY) just 2:41 into the match. Trafton struck again at the 21-minute mark receiving a pass from Maggie Mahoney (Newburyport, MA) and sliding it past the MMA keeper. The Nor’easters went into the half with the 3-0 advantage, after Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, ME) scored with under four minute left in the half.
Maggie Mahoney collected an unassisted goal of her own in the 74th minute to give UNE the 4-0 lead, before the 5th and final goal of the day was scored by Sarah Richardson (Rochester, NH) from Katie Caron (Winslow, ME) at the 80-minute mark.
Leigh Engel (Richmondville, NY) and Jess Woodworth (Concord, NH) combined to shutout MMA without having to make a save in the match, while Lacey Jackson (York, PA) took the loss for MMA making 15 saves on 42 shots. The win improves UNE’s record to 1-0 on the young season while MMA drops to 0-1.
