Lady Mariners Collect First Win of 2009

Machias, Maine -- Callie Thompson (Windsor, ME) scored her first collegiate goal with 10:47 left in regulation to lift the Maine Maritime women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over The University of Maine at Machias today.

The Lady Mariners (1-2) are scheduled to travel to the University of Maine at Presque on Saturday. The Clippers slipped to 1-1 and are scheduled to visit UMaine Farmington on Saturday.

The Lady Mariners had plenty of chances throughout the contest as MMA held a 26-7 shot advantage on the night. The Lady Mariner attack put pressure on Machias netminder Alicia Schmidt (Norwich, CT) all match, forcing her to make 12 saves.

The Lady Mariners got on the board first as a two-time All-Conference selection Katie Hutchinson (Dirigo, ME) scored her first goal of 2009 giving MMA the 1-0 advantage. MMA increased that lead early in the second half when freshman midfielder Alexis Bennett (Freedom, ME) tallied her first collegiate goal off of a feed by Jessica Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) to give MMA the 2-0.

The Clippers battled back, scoring the next two goals, knotting the score at 2-2. Machias midfielder Erin O'Connor (McPherson, KS) scored both goals for the Clippers.

The Lady Mariners capped off the scoring when freshman Callie Thompson scored the game winning goal with 10 minutes remaining in the contest to give MMA the 3-2 lead and the eventual victory.

Lacey
Jackson (York, PA) recorded the win for MMA making one save on three shots, while Schmidt took the loss for the Clippers making 12 saves on 26 shots.
