Lady Mariners hold on to win opener 3-2

Castine, Maine - The Maine Maritime Women’s Soccer team opened the 2007 season with an exciting 3-2 victory over the University of New England. The game marked the first time the two schools had met in soccer.

In the non-conference match it was MMA who got on the scoreboard first when Katie Hutchinson (Dixfield, ME) served the ball on a corner kick to the head of fellow freshman Sarah Radmore (Mexico, ME) to get the Lady Mariners on the scoreboard.

The Noreasters bounced right back though, and Kate Pemberton scored at the 37 minute mark to tie the score at 1-1 going into the half.

UNE dominated play for the next 30 minutes and got their second goal of the match in the 53rd minute on beautiful shot from the left side from Lindsey Rowbotham.

After withstanding the flurry of shots from UNE, MMA went on a scoring spree of their own scoring the final two goals of the match. MMA got the equalizer on an own goal after a nice shot that hit the crossbar from Meghan McKay (Old Town, ME). The game winner for the Lady Mariners came at the 77th minute when freshman Hutchinson shot the ball from the top of the box and drilled in the far left corner.

Lacey Jackson (York, PA) got her first collegiate win in goal for MMA making 7 saves on 21 shots.  Beth Ehmann took the loss for UNE giving up 2 goals in the second half on 3 shots. Keeper Leigh Engel played the first half for UNE giving up one goal on 2 shots.

Next up for the Lady Mariners (1-0-0) is an away game against UMaine Machias on Tuesday at 4:0pm, and next up for UNE (0-1-0) is an away game against New England College on Saturday at 12:00pm.
