Lady Mariners Overcome Sluggish Start To Beat Terriers 74-58

Castine, Maine --- The Maine Maritime Women’s Basketball team overcame a slow start to beat the Terriers from Thomas College 74-58 in a North Atlantic Conference game Tuesday evening at Margaret Smith Chase Gymnasium. The Lady Mariners got scoring from 12 different players en route to their sixth NAC win of the year.

MMA improves to 11-8 overall and moves to 6-2 in the NAC while the Terriers fall to 3-14 overall and 2-7 in the NAC.

MMA was down 6-0 in the first three minutes of action and had four turnovers in their first five possessions before the bench entered the game to give the Lady Mainers a much needed lift. MMA went on a 12-4 run behind the efforts of Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) and took the 12-10 lead at the 14:22 mark of the first half. The Lady Mariners never looked back and went into half time with a 41-28 lead. Casey McCloskey (Portland, ME) had 12 first half points while Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) chipped in with seven first half points of her own.

The Lady Mariners pushed the lead to 22 points early in the second half and the terriers never got within 12 points again in the game. MMA outrebounded Thomas 53-37 and forced 27 Terrier turnovers while collecting 24 assists and 17 steals.

Goda led the Lady Mariners with a game high 21 points and a game high 12 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. Casey Everest finished the game with 15 points while Devyn Curless-Clark (Clinton, ME) played very well scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds. Jessica Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) continued her steady play with seven points and nine rebounds while Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) led the Lady Mariners with seven assists.

The Terriers were led by Karin Bird (Lee, ME) with 23 points but was hampered by nine turnovers in the contest. Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, ME) chipped in with 10 points and a team high eight rebounds while Ashley Matchett (Skowhegan, ME) contributed 8 points.
