Lady Mariners beat UMaine Machias 97-45 in Hockenbury Classic Consolation Game
Lose to St. Lawrence University in Opening Game
NORTHFIELD, Vt. Katie Palmer poured in a game-high 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead St. Lawrence past Maine Maritime, 59-45, in the first round of the Ed Hockenbury Classic Friday evening at Andrews Hall.
St. Lawrence (4-2) outscored Maine Maritime, 10-0, to start the game. Palmer hit a pair of three-pointers and scored eight of the Saints’ 10 points during the game-opening surge. An 8-4 run by the Mariners pulled them to within 12-8 at the 7:10 mark. The Saints ended the first half on a 19-6 spurt to take a comfortable 31-17 lead into halftime.
Palmer scored 19 points in the first half to lead all scorers. The Mariners turned the ball over 16 times in the first half, leading to 15 St. Lawrence points.
St. Lawrence dominated the first 13:14 of the second half, opening its largest lead of the game at 55-25 with 6:46 to play.
Maine Maritime (1-4) fought hard right up until the end, though, closing the contest on a 20-4 run to make the final margin very respectable.
Tatum Welch led the Mariners with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Katie Hutchinson joined Welch in double-figures with 10 points.
The Saints will face Norwich in the championship game of the Ed Hockenbury Classic on Saturday at 3 p.m. Maine Maritime will play Maine-Machias in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the consolation game of the 2008 Ed Hockenbury Classic Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall, Tatum Welch led a quartet of Mariners in double-figures with a game-high 21 points, leading Maine Maritime to a 97-45 victory over Maine-Machias.
Samantha Goda recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Mariners. Katie Pushard chipped in 15 points and 6 assists, and Elizabeth Cote scored 10. Goda also had 6 assists and three steals for the Lady Mariners. Kelsi Eiane led the Lady Marinerss with 7 assists and for her efforts was named to the Hockenbury Classic All-Tournament Team.
Maine Maritime jumped out to a 52-24 halftime lead, and the Mariners never looked back en route to the easy victory.
Maine-Machias was led by Briann Emery, who scored a team-high 20 points.
