Lady Mariners use stifling defense to overwhelm Johnson State 56-33

Castine, Maine --- Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) and Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) combined for 36 points as the Maine Maritime Women’s basketball team shut down Johnson State College 56-33 in a North Atlantic Conference match-up Saturday afternoon at Margaret Smith Gymnasium.

MMA improves to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in the North Atlantic Conference while the Badgers drop to 9-14 overall and 4-8 in the NAC.

Tatum Welch and Sam Goda led the Lady Mariners with 16 points apiece while Goda led the team with 9 boards. The Lady Mariners got an outstanding performance from junior captain Kelsi Eiane (Harpswell, ME) who had a game high 8 assists to go along with zero turnovers. Welch led MMA with 4 steals. The Lady Mariners shot 46% from the floor and 80% from the free throw line while limiting the Badgers to 22% from the floor.

Johnson State’s Claudia Martineau (Washington, VT), played well in the loss scoring 15 points and grabbing 9 boards. Martineau also scored her 1,000th point of her career in the first half of the contest. Staci Cutting (Rochester, VT) was the only other Badger with more than one field goal, scoring 5 points in the loss.
