Lady Mariners beat Coast Guard 49-43
Lose to Evergreen State in Maritime Classic Championship game
Vallejo, CA - The Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball team avenged last seasons loss in the ECAC Tournament to the United States Coast Guard Academy, with a 49-43 win in the first round of the Maritime Classic Tournament hosted by California Maritime Academy.
Freshman forward Samantha Goda (Eliot, ME) led the way for MMA scoring a career high 18 points and grabbing a career high 15 rebounds in the victory. MMA held a 10 point half time lead and pushed the lead to 19 points before the Bears made a late rally to close the gap to 6 before the final horn. The difference in the game was a decisive 17-1 run for the Lady Mariners after trailing 8-0 early in the game. The Lady Mariners held the Bears to 25% shooting and out rebounded them 51-38.
Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) played well in the win scoring 7 points and dishing out 6 assists, while Jess Stahl (Bowdoin, ME) garbbed 8 rebounds. Melissa Martinelli (Vero Beach, FL) led the Bears with 16 points while Chanel Lee (Richmond, VA) grabbed a team high 12 rebounds. With the win, MMA advances to Saturday's championship game against Evergreen State College who defeated California Maritime in the other first round match up.
On Saturday, Maine Maritime took on the Geoducks from Evergreen State College to decide who would take home first place in the 2008 Maritime Classic Tournament. The Lady Mariners dominated play in the first 20 minutes, holding a 26-15 halftime lead, but couldn't hold off the Geoducks in the second half, losing 63-47.
MMA held Evergreen State to 18% shooting in the first half but got outscored 48-21 in the second half on their way to the 16-point defeat. Sam Goda led the Lady Mariners with 10 points and 9 rebounds while sophomore Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) chipped in with 10 points of her own. Jessica Stahl capped off an impressive weekend, scoring 8 points and grabbing 7 rebounds while Katie Pushard added 7 assists in the loss. Freshman Sam Goda was named top the All-Tournament Team for her efforts this weekend. Goda averaged 14 points and 12 rebounds in the two games.
The Geoducks were led by Tournament MVP, Rosalind Lee (Oakland, CA), scoring 17 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Krista Auckland (Olympia, WA) recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Senior Joy White (Oakland, CA) made the All-Tournament Team after scoring 6 points and disrupting the MMA offense with some outstanding defense.
