Lady Mariners beat UMaine Fort Kent 50-45 in Mariner Classic Opening Game
Endicott runs by Saint Joseph's College 89-62, will face MMA in Championship game
Castine, ME. Sam Goda (Eliot, ME) poured in a game-high 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Maine Maritime past UMaine Fort Kent, 50-45, in the first round of the Mariner Classic Saturday afternoon at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. In the first game of the day, Endicott College improved to 5-3 with a convincing 89-62 victory over St. Joseph's College to move into the championship game.
Maine Maritime (3-4) outscored UMFK, 32-18, in the second half to overcome a 9-point halftime deficit and secure the victory.
The Lady Mariners were led in the second half by Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) and Goda, who combined to score 20 of MMA's 32 second half points. The Bengals turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, leading to 18 MMA points.
Katie Hutchinson (Dixfield, ME) joined Goda and Welch in double-figures with 11 points while Elizabeth Cote (Brewer, ME) contributed 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Bengals were led by Ashley Ames (Dexter, ME) who scored 14 points and a team high 7 rebounds. Ames also reached a personal milestone in the game, scoring 1,000th point of her career just minutes into the contest. Kristen Violette (Fort Kent, ME) played well in the loss scoring 12 points, while Shir Fuchs (Herzeliya, Israel) contributed 12 of her own. The loss drops the Bengals record to 3-5 on the year.
The Lady Mariners will face Endicott in the championship game of the Mariner Classic on Sunday at 3 p.m. UMFK will play St. Joe's in the consolation game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In the opening game of the 2008 Mariner Classic Saturday afternoon at Margaret Smith Gymnasium, Nicole Duchesne (Plaistow, NH) led a five Gulls in double-figures with a game-high 22 points, leading Endicott to a 89-62 victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
Ashley Wright (Merrimack, NH), scored 18 points, collected 4 assists, and had 6 steals while knocking down 4 three's in the game. Brittany Kelleher (Wakefield, MA) chipped in 13 points while Ashley Vitale (Wilmington, MA) and Jenna Cosgrove (Sharon, MA) each had 11.
The Gulls shot a sultry 50% from the floor and outscored the Monks 52-31 in the first half to run away with the win.
St. Joe's was led by Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH), who scored a team-high 13 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds. Sarah Fournier (Jay, ME) was the only other Monk player to reach double figures, scoring 11 in the loss
The loss drops St. Joseph's record to 6-3 on the year.
