ELMS COLLEGE SLIPS TO MAINE MARITIME, 62-51
CHICOPEE, MA, Feb. 1, 2008 MMA freshman forward Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) recorded another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while fellow freshman Ashley Tilton (Lubec, ME) had a career high 10 points en route to a 62-51 win over the Blazers in Friday night’s North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women’s basketball game at the Maguire Center. Maine Maritime won its fifth straight game to improve to 11-7 overall, 6-1 NAC. Elms College fell to 6-12, 3-5 NAC.
The Blazers trailed just 27-20 following a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, CT) with 47 seconds remaining in the first half.
Freshman forward Ashley Tilton (pictured left), however, responded 15 seconds later with a rare 4-point play, as she drained a 3-pointer and ensuing free throw after being fouled from the top of the arc to extend the Lady Mariners’ lead to 31-20.
Following a layup by Wanat that cut the Blazers’ deficit to 31-22, freshman forward Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) hauled in an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer and deposited a layup as time expired to give Maine Maritime a 33-22 halftime lead.
The Lady Mariners then opened the second half with a 9-1 run over the first 5:17 to eventually put the game out of reach. Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) added 9 points for MMA, while Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) scored 8 points.
