Maine Maritime loses defensive battle to Castleton 44-45

Castine, Maine – The Spartans improve to 10-1 in conference play with the 45-44 victory over the Lady Mariners. The score was tied at half 22-22 and came down to the last couple of possessions before the Spartans squeaked out the road victory.

Castleton was led by Jess Banks (Milford, CT), who scored 16 points and earned 4 steals in the win. Laura Cary (Schaghticoke, NY) also played well in the win scoring 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Mary Nienow (Middlebury, VT) scored 6 points and grabbed 7rebounds.

The Lady Mariners were led by freshmen forward Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) who scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Amethyst Cousins also played well in the loss scoring 8 points and grabbing 6 rebounds, while Megan Franklin (Skowhegan, ME) had 7 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

The game was dominated by defense as Castleton held MMA to 27.5% shooting while MMA held the Spartans to 32% shooting. MMA out-rebounded Castleton 42-36 in the game.

With the win the Castleton Spartans improve to 14-6 (10-1) and will be back in action February 9th when they travel to Husson College for a 2pm start. The Mariners fell to 12-8 (7-2) and will be back in action Saturday when they host Johnson State College.
