Maine Maritime Pulls Away From UMaine Presque Isle 68-44
GORHAM,Maine – Junior forward Megan Franklin (Skowhegan, Maine) scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to a 68-44 win over the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls in the consolation game of the 2008 USM Invitational Tournament.
The win stops a two-game slide by the Mariners who improve to 6-4 overall. UMaine Presque Isle drops to 3-7 overall suffering its third straight loss.
Franklin was one of two Mariners in double figures and was joined by freshman guard Brittany Hunt (Hickory, N.C.) who scored 13 points off of the bench. Freshman forward Tatum Welch (Newport, Maine) added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds. Welch was named to the all-tournament team for the Mariners after posting a 12-point, 11-rebound ‘double-double’ in their opening round game against Clark University.
Junior forward Erica Davis (Cumberland, Maine) recorded team-high totals to lead the Owls with 11 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Anna Lenentine (Monticello, Maine) and
freshman guard Mindy Dolley (LeGrange, Maine) each 40-35, with 12:52 remaining in the game, Maine Maritime rattled off 23 unanswered points to pull away from the Owls. The Mariners used a run-and-jump defensive set to unsettle the Owls forcing them into six
turnovers and an abysmal 0-for-10 shooting performance during the key eight minute stretch. At the end of the run, Maine Maritime had the game in hand with a 63-35 lead with less than five minutes to play. Franklin scored 10 of her 18 points in the run.
Maine Maritime finished the game shooting 34.3 percent (23-for-67) from the field, dominating the paint and capitalizing on the Owls’ miscues. The Mariners outscored UMaine Presque Isle 28-10 near the basket and scored 25 of their 68 points off of turnovers. The Owls committed 27 turnovers and shot just 27.7 percent (13-for-47) from the
field for the game.
Maine Maritime and UMaine Presque Isle are schedule to meet each other again on Tuesday (Jan. 8) at 2 p.m. in Presque isle.
