Lady Mariners hold off Colby College 76-66
Castine, Maine - The Maine Maritime Academy Lady Mariners won their home opener against the Colby College Mules 76-66 in a non-conference game. The Lady Mariners had 4 players score in double figures and out-rebounded Colby en route to the victory. With the win, MMA improves to 2-1 on the season and Colby falls to 1-3.
Leading the way for the Lady Mariners was freshmen forward Tatum Welch (Newport, ME) who registered a career high 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. Junior forward Megan Franklin (Skowhegan, ME) added 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Senior point guard Kaitlyn Leeman (Baileyville, ME) played outstanding in the win scoring 10 points, collecting 5 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists. Also playing well for the Lady Mariners was freshman Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) who scored a career high 13 points and dished out 6 assists.
Senior forward Katie McCabe (Watertown, CT) played well in the loss scoring 19 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Freshmen forward Julianne Kowalski (Monteville, NJ) scored a career high 19 points and also grabbed 8 rebounds.
Leading 35-25 at halftime, the Lady Mariners hung on in the second half on the strength of 43% shooting from the floor. For the game, MMA out rebounded Colby by a margin of 39-35.
Next up for Maine Maritime is the Mariner Classic in which MMA will host Wentworth Institute of Technology, UMaine Machias, and UMaine Fort Kent. Saturday’s games include WIT playing UMaine Fort Kent at 1pm while MMA hosts UMaine Machias at 3pm. On Sunday WIT will play UMaine Machias at 1pm and MMA will host UMaine Fort Kent at 3pm. Colby College will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
