Maine Maritime Volleyball Standout Becca Allen
Nominated For NCAA Woman of the Year
The NCAA has announced the conference and independent nominees for the 18th annual NCAA Woman of the Year Award. 2008 Maine Maritime graduate and volleyball standout Becca Allen is this year’s North Atlantic Conference representative for the Woman of the Year Award. Becca Allen is presently pursuing a graduate degree at MMA and is an assistant coach with the Lady Mariner Volleyball team.
The Woman of the Year honor recognizes outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically in addition to demonstrating strong community service and leadership. The nominees represent all three divisions (DI, DII, and DIII).
The top ten honorees in each division will be announced later this month followed by the selection of the top three honorees by each division. To be eligible for this award, the female student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and competed during the 2007-08 academic year. In addition, each individual must have completed intercollegiate eligibility in her primary sport by the end of the 2008 spring season and must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.5.
Becca Allen proved to be this and much more during her time at MMA. During the 2007 season Allen was captain of the Volleyball Team and helped lead them to the program’s first NAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Bucksport native also excelled in the classroom, being named a Scheel Scholar which is a symbol of recognition as the outstanding student in each major at MMA.
Becca was named a COSIDA Academic All-American in Volleyball and graduated in May with Summa Cum Laudae honors. She was also recognized with the Phyllis Tenney Award, MMA’s highest community service honor, for her contributions in the surrounding area. Finally, Becca was honored by the Maine Maritime Athletic Department, as it’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2008.
MMA Director of Athletics, Jim Dyer states: “Becca Allen is the absolute epitome of the true student-athlete. She was one of our top students, an Academic All-American, received our highest community service honor, was an all-conference player and our female athlete of the year. I congratulate Becca on this prestigious recognition from the NAC and the NCAA.”
