Lady Mariner Volleyball wins 2 matches

Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted Lyndon State College for a NAC contest and UMaine Presque Isle for a non-conference match-up Saturday at Margaret Smith Gymnasium and came away with two wins to improve their overall record to 9-8 on the year. UMaine Presque Isle split two matches while Lyndon State lost a pair.

In the first match the Lady Mariners beat the Lyndon State College Hornets by the score of 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, and 25-8). Amy Young (Cumberland, ME) led MMA with 11 kills on 18 attempts (61%), and 4 aces. The junior middle hitter also collected 9 digs and 2 blocks. Kayley Rodriguez (Quincy, IL) added 7 kills and 5 aces while Nicole St. Pierre (Baileyville, ME) and Kristi Gordon (Auburn, ME) each added 6 kills. Heather Moore (Macedon, NY) led MMA with 19 assists and 8 aces while Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) added 18 digs. Michelle Petty (Pawlet, VT) led the Hornets with 3 kills and 5 digs while Kayla Brobst (Merrimack, NH) collected 2 blocks in the match. The win improved MMA’s record to 8-8 (3-1 NAC) on the year while the Hornets drop to 2-11 (0-2 NAC) on the season.

In the second match of the day, the Owls of UMaine Presque Isle defeated the Hornets from Lyndon State College by the score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-9). Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME) led UMPI with 8 kills while Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) added 11 assists and 5 aces. Kayla Brobst led Lyndon with 5 kills and 4 digs. The loss drops the Hornets to 2-12 on the year while UMPI improves to 7-2.

The third match of the day featured the Lady Mariners and the UMPI Owls going head to head. MMA controlled play and won the match 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-14, and 25-19). Kristi Gordon led the Lady Mariners with 13 kills while Nicole St. Pierre added 9 of her own. Amy Young had 7 kills, 4 aces, and 15 digs for MMA while Heather Moore added 25 digs. Lauren Sakahara broke her own school record piling up another 36 digs in the match adding to her team high of 316 on the year. Erica Davis led UMPI with 11 kills, while Megan Korhonen compiled 28 assists in the match. Karen Crieghton (Sussex, NB) had 4 blocks. The win moves MMA to 9-8 on the season and the loss drops the Owls to 7-3 on the year.
