Lady Mariner Volleyball wins 2 matches
Castine, Maine - The Lady Mariner Volleyball team hosted two non-conference opponents (UMaine Machias & St. Joesph’s College) Saturday at Margaret Smith Gymnasium. On a day in which the MMA seniors were honored for their outstanding careers, it was 2 sophomores who stole the show. Amy Young and Michelle Ferry led the Lady Mariners to 2 victories on the afternoon.
In the first match the Lady Mariners beat UMaine Machias by the score of 3-2 (30-28, 27-30, 30-17, 24-30, and 15-11). Amy Young (Cumberland, ME) led MMA with 20 kills, 28 digs, and 5 aces. Michelle Ferry (Princeton, ME) added 17 kills, and 27 digs, while Becca Allen (Bucksport, ME) had 48 assists and 6 aces. Ashley Tilton (Lubec, ME) had one of the better matches of her young career, posting 14 kills (.48%) and 19 digs. Amber Reed led the Clippers with 15 kills and 27 assists, while Angela Moody collected 24 digs in the match. The win improved MMA’s record to 11-5 on the year while the Clippers drop to 19-7 on the season.
In the second match of the day, the Clippers of UMaine Machias defeated the Monks from St. Joseph’s College by the score of 3-0 (30-11, 30-26, 30-16). The win moved the Clippers record to 20-7 on the season and the Monks drop to 4-18. Amber Reed led Machias with 15 kills and 9 digs while Katie Moore added 6 assists. Marissa Huntley collected 8 kills in the match. Mary Hoyt led the Monks with 7 kills, Marcie Gowen had 12 assists, and Monique Lajoie had 17 digs.
The third match of the day featured the Lady Mariners and St. Joe’s going head to head. MMA controlled play and won the match 3-0 (30-22, 30-12, 30-26). Michelle Ferry and Amy Young once again led the Lady Mariners with 9 kills apiece. Young also had 17 digs, while Casey Morey (Easton, MD) had 14 digs and 5 aces. Becca Allen had 30 assists in the match and Kristi Gordon (Auburn, ME) continued her inspired play with 7 kills. St. Joe’s was led by Monique Lajoie (6 kills) and Marcie Gowen who had 9 assists. The win moves MMA to 12-5 on the season and the loss drops the Monks to 4-19 on the year.
Next up for the Lady Mariners is an away tri-match against Castleton State and Husson College on October 20th in Bangor.
