Lady Mariners Take Two From UMPI

The Maine Maritime Lady Mariners improved to 5-0 on the season with a sweep of a double header against UMaine Presque Isle 14-3 and 9-1 in non-conference action Saturday at the UMaine Dome. With the two wins, MMA starts the season with five straight victories for the first time in the programs history.

In the first game, Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) picked up three hits and four RBI’s propelling MMA to a 14-3 win over Owls from UMaine Presque Isle.

UMPI got the scoring started in the first inning, scoring an unearned run after two Lady Mariner errors. MMA responded with two runs in the second and two more in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Owls responded with a run in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 4-2 before MMA erupted for 10 runs to put the game out of reach.

MMA scored five times in the 4th inning and five more times in the top of the 5th, capped off by a three run home run off the bat of Kayla Higgins (Sullivan, ME).

The Lady Mariners cranked out 12 hits with Stanley leading the way going 3-for-4 with four RBI’s and two doubles. Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) added three hits to go along with two runs and two RBI’s while McKenzie Burke (Wells, ME) had two RBI’s and two runs scored. McKenzie Burke picked up her third win of the season for MMA giving up seven hits over five innings of work while striking out three batters. She improves to 3-0 on the year.

Lainey Herring led the Owls with two hits and two RBI’s while Brittany Humphrey collected two hits in the loss. Nicole Russell took the loss giving up twelve hits and 10 earned runs over five innings while striking out three batters. The Owls were hampered by 10 errors.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) threw a one hitter while striking out six, and improved to 2-0 on the year. Freshman Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, ME) carried the offense, going 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBI’s, and a home run.

The Lady Mariners scored in every inning while collecting 12 hits en route to the victory. Stanley collected three more RBI’s giving her seven on the day while McCloskey finished off a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. McCloskey pitched five strong innings giving up just the one hit and faced only 17 batters.

Lainey Herring took the loss for the Owls going five innings and giving up nine runs on 12 hits. Herring collected the only hit for UMPI.
