MMA Takes Two From Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. (April 10, 2010) - Visiting Maine Maritime Academy took a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) softball games from Johnson State College on Saturday by the scores of 9-2 and 8-2. The Badgers drop to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the NAC while MMA improves to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the NAC.

MMA's McKenzie Burke (Wells, Maine) struck out nine and allowed only two earned runs and one walk for a complete-game win in the opening game of the day's twin bill. Burke also supplied a pair of hits, a run and an RBI in a 2-for-4 effort while Mallery Stanley (Standish, Maine) smacked a pair of doubles while also going 2-for-4. Kayla Higgins homered in the fifth inning to aid in her 2-for-4, two RBI day.

Johnson's Meaghan Russ (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) pitched the complete-game for Johnson allowing 10 hits and enduring a five-error day from the defense in the loss. Desi Lacasse (Hardwick, Vt./Hazen) drove in both JSC runs with a two-run single in the second inning. Ashley Allegrini (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Kayla Golfin (Castleton, Vt./Fair Haven) each went 2-for-4 while both Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) and Brittany Lumsden (Hardwick, Vt./Hazen) both doubled in the game.

In the nightcap the Mariners Casey McCloskey (Howland, Maine) struck out 12 JSC batters and allowed just four hits to earn a complete-game win. Leah Jackson (Holden, Maine) went 2-for-4 with a run and a double while Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, Maine) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. McKenzie Burke (Wells, Maine) scored a pair of runs to supplement the MMA offense.

JSC's had another tough defensive outing committing four errors that led to six unearned runs behind pitcher Julie Gervais (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg). Gervais would pitch all seven innings, scatter nine hits, and strike out five in the loss. Caitlyn Mackey (St. Albans, Vt./BFA-St. Albans) doubled and scored in the game while Tanya Randall (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), Maria Lovelette (Berkshire, Vt./Enosburg), and Ashley Allegrini (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) each had singles for Johnson.
