Lady Mariners Improve to 3-0
Burke Gets Win and Hits Home Run
The Maine Maritime Lady Mariners improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1 victory over Fisher College in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the UMaine Dome. McKenzie Burke (Wells, ME) picked up her second win of the year and hit a home run that broke open the game helping the Lady Mariners to one of their best starts in the last five years at 3-0.

Fisher College started the scoring in the top of the first when Jackie Streeter drove in Brittany Calderon on a single to left field. The Falcons threatened for more runs but Burke proceeded to strike out Amanda Davis for the second out before MMA catcher Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) threw out Streeter trying to steal second to end the rally.
MMA quickly answered in the bottom half of the first tying the score at 1-1 when Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) drove in Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) from third after Hunt tripled to left center field.
Both teams remained scoreless until the Lady Mariners broke out for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
MMA’s Kayla Higgins (Sullivan, ME) led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Leah Jackson picked up her only hit of the day advancing Higgins to third base. With runners on the corners, Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, ME) singled to drive in MMA’s second run of the day. McKenzie Burke then stepped to the plate and put the game out of reach with a three run homer giving the Lady Mariners a 5-1 lead. MMA tacked on one more run after two stolen bases by Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) and a Hunt ground out to give MMA the 6-1 lead.
The Lady Mariners cranked out 9 hits with Brittany Hunt and Burke each collecting two. McKenzie Burke finished the day with three RBI’s while scattering five hits and striking out five batters over seven innings of work on the mound.
Jackie Streeter had a hit and Fisher’s only RBI in the loss. Mika Wilson took the loss for the Falcons, giving up nine hits over six innings while striking out five. The Falcons drop to 0-7 on the year.
