Lady Mariners open season with two wins
Freshman hurlers lead the way
The Maine Maritime Lady Mariners started the 2010 season with a sweep of a double header against Fisher College 8-6 and 7-0 in non-conference action Friday night at the UMaine Dome. MMA jumps out to 2-0 on the year while the Falcons drop to 0-2.

In the first game, McKenzie Burke (Wells, ME) picked up the win in her first collegiate start and helped her own cause, hitting a two run home run propelling MMA to an 8-6 win over Fisher College.
MMA got the scoring started in the second inning, sending the first run of the game across the plate when Hannah Seamans (Athens, ME) drove in Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) giving MMA the 1-0 advantage. MMA took a 2-0 lead in the third when Kayla Higgins (Sullivan, ME) singled to left center driving in Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) after Hunt led off the inning with a triple.
Fisher answered with a run in the top of the fourth on an Amanda Davis (Dos Palos, CA) RBI single cutting the lead to 2-1. The Lady Mariners tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 5-1 lead after a McKenzie Burke (Wells, ME) two run home run to left field.
MMA scored three more times to take a 8-1 lead before the Falcons tacked on five runs in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 8-6. Amanda Davis capped off the five run inning with her first home run of the season.
The Lady Mariners cranked out 14 hits with Kayla Higgins leading the way going 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Stanley and Burke each added two RBI’s while Brittany Hunt had two hits including a triple. McKenzie Burke picked up the win giving up 12 hits over seven innings of work while striking out two batters.
Brittany Calderon (Enosburg Falls, VT) led the Falcons with three hits while Amanda Davis collected three hits and three RBI’s. Calderon took the loss giving up seven hits while striking out four MMA batters in three innings of work.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) threw a four hit shutout while striking out ten, collecting her first collegiate win. Sophomore Kayla Higgins added a two run home run to help lead the offense.
The Lady Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after collecting a walk and four singles. Brittany Hunt led off the inning with a walk and was followed up with singles by Megan Russell (Peru, ME) and Nicole Poland (Damariscotta, ME), which loaded the bases. Mallery Stanley proceeded to single, driving in two runs, and giving MMA the 2-0 lead. Leah Jackson continued the hit parade singling in Poland while moving Stanley to third base giving MMA the 3-0 advantage. Stanley scored the last run of the inning on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Hannah Seamans.
MMA tacked on their fifth run of the game in the second inning when Casey McCloskey reached on an error and then swiped third base and into scoring position. McCloskey was then driven in by a Brittany Hunt RBI, pushing the lead to 5-0. MMA added their last two runs of the game when Kayla Higgins hit her first homerun on 2010 driving in Poland.
MMA collected seven hits for the game and was led by Higgins and Stanley who collected two RBI’s apiece. Fisher mustered just four hits including a double by Brittany Calderon. Mika Wilson (Chelsea, ME) took the loss for the Falcons.
