CROWELL THROWS ONE-HITTER TO LEAD COLBY SOFTBALL PAST MMA
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) tossed a one-hitter and nearly pitched a perfect game as the Colby College softball team took an 8-0 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference game Tuesday at Crafts Field.
Crowell allowed a one-out fourth inning single and pitched to just one batter over the minimum after striking out four and walking none. She improved to 5-3 on the season.
The Mules (12-7) scored three runs in the first inning after Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.) led off with a walk and Allyson Cheever (Augusta, Maine) singled. Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.) smacked a two-run double to left field to bring in both runners. Lepore later scored on a sacrifice fly by Barbara Santos (Topsfield, Mass.).
The game stayed that way until Colby scored four times in the fourth inning. Alex Essman, who went 3-for-3 on the day, had an RBI single and Lizzi Fort (Wilmette, Ill.) had an RBI walk in the inning. Cheever, Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.), Essman, and Santos had the runs.
Annie Wilson (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) singled and later scored on a RBI single by Essman to give the Mules one more run in the fifth to end the game with the eight-run mercy rule.
Lepore finished with a pair of doubles and Cheever also had two hits for Colby.
Maine Maritime pitcher Mallery Stanley (Standish, Maine) had the lone hit for the Mariners with a single to center field in the fourth inning.
Colby plays host to University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. game. The Mariners play two games at Castleton State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
