Lady Mariners swept in double-header by Castleton
Game 1: Castleton 10 MMA 9
The Castleton State College Spartans scored 9 runs in the last four innings to outlast Maine Maritime 10-9 in an extra inning affair. Offense was the story of the day for Castleton as they collected 10 hits and five walks in the victory. MMA pitcher Amanda Barker (pictured left) struck out 11 Spartan batters, but five Lady Mariner errors leading to seven unearned runs cost them a chance at victory.
Castleton led 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when MMA responded with four runs to even the score at 5-5. Castleton quickly answered in the top of the seventh with three runs to take a decisive three run lead into the bottom of the inning. MMA battled back scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh to take the game into extra innings. In the eight the Spartans scored two runs and held off a late inning rally by MMA to win the game 10-9.
Freshman second baseman Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) led MMA at the plate going 4-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Asia Ross (Southwest Harbor, ME) went 1 for 2 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI’s while Sam Rheaume (Andover, NH) went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Amanda Barker took the loss for MMA and dropped to 3-1 on the season.
Castleton shortstop Laura Rogers (Schuylerville, NY), led the way going 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored, two stolen bases, and two RBI’s in the game. Angie Carpenter (Sharon, VT) helped her own cause at the plate going 1 for 3 with two RBI’s while Hilary Bemis (Crown Point, NY) went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tosha Wittemore (Bridport, VT) got the win for Castleton pitching one inning and giving up one run on one hit. Angie Carpenter pitched seven innings giving up nine hits, eight walks, and six earned runs.
Game 2: Castleton 18 MMA 3
Maine Maritime dropped to 4-2 (2-2 NAC) on the season losing a one sided affair to Castleton 18-3. Laura Rogers (Schuylerville, NY) pitched well on the mound for the Spartans, scattering four hits and three runs over seven innings and helped improve the Spartans’ record to 3-5 (3-1 NAC). Leading 2-0 going into the top of the fourth, Castleton scored three times to widen the gap between them and the Lady Mariners. MMA responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning but never got closer as Castleton tagged on 11 runs in the seventh to cruise to the victory.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Richard (Milford, ME) struggled on the mound for MMA giving up all 18 runs on 15 hits and five walks. The lone bright spot in the game for MMA was freshman Mallery Stanley (pictured left) who went 2 for 3 at the plate with a two runs and an RBI. Stanley collected a double and a triple in the game to lead MMA.
Laura Rogers did the job at the plate for Castleton as well going 3 for 5 with three runs and four RBI’s while Cassandra Koehne contributed a 3 for 5 afternoon with two RBI’s. Angie Carpenter (Sharon, VT) was outstanding at the plate collecting four hits and scoring three times and Brandy White (Springfield, VT) had a 2 for 4 game with three runs scored.
