v Machias

MMA wins 3-2 in spectacular fashion

Machias, Maine -- Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) netted a pair of goals, with the game winner coming with three seconds to play, helping the Maine Maritime men's soccer team top the University of Maine at Machias 2-1 in non-conference action Wednesday evening.

The Mariners (2-1) are scheduled to play at the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday, while the Clippers (0-1) are slated to visit UMaine Farmington on Saturday.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest when Nate Tipton gathered a pass from Nick El-Hajj (Hampden, ME) and tucked it by the Machias keeper for his first tally of the day and his third of the season.

The Clippers evened the score a 1-1 later in the first half when Greg Dawson (St. Andrews, Scotland) converted off of a free kick from Anthony Martiniano (Troy, NY). It was the only shot the Clippers had in the first half.

Both teams had their chances in the second half (MMA 9 shots, Machias 7 Shots) before the Mariners converted as time expired. MMA's Abdullah Alkhayyat (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) placed the ball onto the foot of Tipton with under 10 seconds left, and the sophomore striker ended the contest with a one time blast into the far left corner of the net.

Mariner netminder Jeff Butland (Cumberland, ME) made two saves in the win.

Kyle Lancaster (Richmond, ME) stopped five shots in the loss as the Clippers were outshot 12-8.
