MMA Gets Overtime Goal to Beat Lyndon State 2-1
Castine, Maine The Maine Maritime Academy Men’s Soccer team got a goal in the first minute of overtime from Greg Smith (North Yarmouth, ME) to propel the Mariners past the Lyndon State College Hornets on Sunday in North Atlantic Conference action. With the win MMA improves to 8-5-1 and 4-2 in the NAC while the Hornets drop to 3-10-3 and 0-5-1 in conference play.
The Mariners scored first in the 28th minute when Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) crossed the ball through the box to the foot of striker Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) who blasted it by the keeper for the score and the 1-0 lead. The goal by Tipton was his 11th tally of the year.
The Hornets came out of the half and scored in the first 30 seconds on a goal by Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, VT). Lumumba took a pass from Teague Coyle (Northfield, NH) from 30 yards out and one timed the ball off an MMA defender and into the top corner for the equalizer.
Regulation play ended with the score tied at 1-1 with MMA outshooting the Hornets 20-14.
The Mariners got the game winner with 95:29 gone in the match when Greg Smith collected a loose ball from a deflection inside the box and sent it into the back of the net for the victory.
MMA keeper Jeff Butland got the win for MMA making 8 saves on 16 shots. Jason Gray (East Thetford, VT) took the loss for the Hornets making 9 saves on the afternoon.
