Southern Maine blanks Maine Maritime 2-0

Castine, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies shut out the Mariners from Maine Maritime 2-0 on Tuesday in a non-conference match-up between the two Maine schools. The win improves the Huskies record to 10-6-1 on the year while the loss drops MMA’s record to 4-9-1.

Both teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first half of the match but the Huskies broke through in the 54th minute when Derek Peters (Springvale, ME) received a pass inside the box from Peter McHugh (Portland, ME) and slid it by the MMA keeper for the goal and the 1-0 lead.

USM struck again in the 71st minute when Mohamed Mohamed (Biddeford, ME) connected off a nice pass from Peters to give USM the 2-0 advantage and secure the victory for the Huskies.

Southern Maine keeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA) recorded the shutout, making 2 saves on 14 MMA shots. Jeff Butland (Cumberland, ME) took the loss for the Mariners giving up both goals while making 7 saves on 28 USM shots. USM outshot MMA 28-14.

MMA will be in action this Saturday as they wrap up their regular season schedule with a 2pm kickoff against Thomas College. USM will take the field again on Saturday when they host Western Connecticut.
