Mariners batter the Rams 8-0

Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy scored early and often as they defeated the Rams from Unity College 8-0 on Tuesday evening. The Mariners score two goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and proceeded to rattle off six more goals to run away with the victory and improve their record to 2-3-0 on the season.

The Mariners tallied their first goal in the 5th minute of the game when freshman Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) scored an unassisted goal from the left corner of the box that was blasted into the lower right corner of the net. MMA struck again at the 10-minute mark of the 1st-half when Pat Somma (Windham, ME) converted an indirect kick from Dan Hassett (Falmouth, ME) from inside the six-yard box and tucked it past the keeper to put MMA up 2-0. MMA struck again in the 19th-minute going up 3-0 when Tipton crossed the ball from the right side and forward Josh McFarland (Searsport, ME) finished the play as he volleyed the ball out of the air and redirected it into the high right corner of the net.

The Mariners scored again just four minutes later when Tipton received a pass from Jakub Rucinski (Portland, ME)and found the back of the net to increase the lead to 4-0. Maine Maritime increased their lead to 5-0 in the 56th minute when sophomore Greg Smith (North Yarmouth, ME) found a loose ball inside the box to score the unassisted goal. MMA struck again at the 62:00 minute mark when Smith found Tipton inside the box for his third goal of the match and the 6-0 lead. Freshman Kyle Ritchie (Searsport, ME) scored his first collegiate goal to put MMA up 7-0 before the Mariners scored their final goal of the match when Omar Chaar (Stockton Springs, ME) scored an unassisted goal to close out the score at 8-0.

MMA keeper Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, NH) faced six shots, earning his second win of the year. Jeff Butland (Cumberland, ME) shared in the shutout playing 29 minutes without facing a shot for the Mariners. Chad Pin (Huntington, MA) took the loss for Unity giving up eight goals on 34 shots. The Mariners outshot the Rams 34-6 in the match.

Next up for the Mariners (2-3-0) is an away game against UMaine Farmington on Saturday at 1:00pm in Farmington Maine.
