Mariners win in overtime 2-1 on a penalty kick

Tipton scores twice

Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime striker Nate Tipton (West Chester, PA) converted a penalty kick in the first overtime giving the Mariners a 2-1 win over UMaine Presque Isle in a non-conference match-up Wednesday night at Ritchie Field. The win avenges an earlier season loss to the Owls for MMA and improves their record to 3-4 on the season.

The Owls (3-2-1) tallied the first goal of the match in the 33rd minute when Tony Hibbard (Bingham, ME) scored off a pass from Corey Harding (Plymouth, ME) and lifted it past the MMA keeper into the top left corner for the 1-0 lead. Both teams played scoreless until the last minute of the match when MMA freshman striker Nate Tipton converted a direct kick from just outside the 18 and placed it beautifully into the top right corner to tie the score at 1-1.

The Mariners kept the pressure on the Owls and with just four minutes gone in the first overtime, they were presented with a penalty kick after an UMPI foul inside the penalty area. Nate Tipton once again stepped up and converted the shot to elevate the Mariners to the exciting 2-1 victory.

MMA keeper Jeff Butland (Cumberland, ME) made 7 saves on the 18 UMPI shots, picking up his first career victory. UMPI keeper Richard Felbaum (Saco, ME) made 4 saves on 15 MMA shots in the defeat.

Next up for the Mariners (3-4-0) is a weekend trip to Vermont. On Saturday the Mariners will take on Johnson State at 1pm and then on Sunday they will square off against Lyndon State for a 12pm kick-off.
