Green Mountain wins first match of the year 3-0 over MMA

Castine, Maine – The Green Mountain College Eagles played inspired soccer beating MMA 3-0 on Sunday in a North Atlantic Conference match-up. The win is the first of the year for the Eagles and comes at a bad time for the Mariners as they try to put themselves in position for a playoff spot. MMA drops to 4-7-1 and 1-4 in the NAC while Green Mountain improves to 1-15 and 1-4 in the NAC.

Freshman midfielder Ryan Spill (Howell, NJ) got the Eagles on the scoreboard after collecting a loose ball inside the box and tucked the ball past the MMA keeper to put Green Mountain on top 1-0. Both teams battled back and forth but failed to convert until the 78th minute when Brendan Regan (Henderson, NV) put Green Mountain up 2-0 after scoring on a penalty kick.

The Mariners had a chance to inch closer late in the match but failed to convert on their own penalty kick opportunity and still trailed 2-0 with 10 minutes left. The Eagles put the icing on the day when they scored as the final buzzer sounded when Colin Miner (Stratford, NH) dribbled through the MMA defense and blasted the ball into the back of the net.

MMA keeper Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, NH) gave up three goals for MMA and made five saves on 15 shots. Ryder Ritchie (Gloucester, MA) recorded the shutout for Green Mountain making 9 saves on 20 shots.
