Mariners lose opener 1-0 to UNE
Castine, Maine - The University of New England and Maine Maritime Academy played to a standstill for 89 minutes and until the Noreasters converted on a corner kick with one minute remaining to steal a victory in Castine.
In the Non Conference match that saw UNE outshoot MMA 18-4, it took one set play to determine a hard fought match between the two Maine schools.
The Noreasters scored on a corner from Brad Carlson, as he found a streaking Ryan Tarr at the far post and Tarr didn’t miss his chance as he burried the ball in the far corner. It was the only shot that got by MMA keeper Randy Bartlett as he made 5 saves on the UNE 18 shots. Derek Poulin recorded his first win of the season for UNE making 1 save in the victory.
Next up for the Mariners (0-1-0) is an away game against UMaine Machias on Tuesday at 6pm, and next up for UNE (1-0-0) is an away game against USM on Monday.
