Mariners lose to Terriers 2-1

Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy (2-7-2 overall and 0-5-1 NAC) hosted the Thomas College Terriers (5-3-3 overall and 1-2-1) in a makeup game tonight at Ritchie Field. Thomas escaped with the hard fought 2-1 win and improved their playoff position in the NAC.

The Mariners scored first, 14:28 into the contest, when Omar Chaar (Stockton Springs, ME) headed a cross from Derrek Belanger (Presque Isle, ME) into the near corner to put MMA up 1-0. Less than a minute later, Timothy Costa (Pelham, NH) gathered a pass from Kenneth Mitchell (Sanford, ME) inside the 6 and slipped it pass the keeper to even the score at 1-1. MMA out shot the Terriers 4-2 in the half but the score remained tied at 1 after 45 minutes.

The Terriers score first in the second half to go ahead 2-1 at the 62:12 mark in the game. The goal was scored when a Thomas corner was cleared to Christopher Vashon (Augusta, ME) who chipped it back in the box from about 40 yards to the head of Taylor Helberg (Winslow, ME). Helberg then flicked the ball over the keeper for the game winner.

MMA out shot the Terriers 12-8, but Thomas keeper Russell Beckwith (North Berwick, ME) made some critical stops to keep MMA at bay. Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, NH) made 3 saves on 7 shots in the loss.

Next up for the Mariners (2-7-2) is a home game against the UMaine Presque Isle on Sunday at 7pm, and next up for Thomas (5-3-3) has an away game against UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday.
