Mariners fall at home to Becker 4-3
Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy hosted the Becker College Hawks on Sunday in college soccer action. The Mariners lost offensive battle 4-3 and fell to 2-6-2 and 0-4-1 in NAC play. The win helped Becker improve to 8-3 and 3-1 in NAC play.
The Mariners scored first, 18 minutes into the contest when Jeff Normand (Orono, ME) found a loose ball inside the box and blasted it into the top right corner of the net to put MMA up 1-0. Three minutes later MMA scored again when Alan Alexander (Cumberland, ME) received a pass from Derrek Belanger (Presque Isle, ME) and passed it by the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net. The Hawks answered quickly getting on the score board just two minutes after MMA’s second goal. Scott Medeiros (Assonet, MA) gathered a loose ball from a corner kick and chipped it into the open net for Becker’s first tally of the day. The teams remained scoreless for the next 24 minutes and went into the half with MMA leading 2-1.
Becker evened the score (2-2) at the 57 minute mark of the second half when Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, MA) scored off of a beautiful feed from Brunel Pierre (West Yarmouth, MA). Only a minute later Alie Samura (Milton, MA) put the Hawks up 3-2 when he headed in a pass from Samuel Adjei (Worcester, MA) into the far left corner of the goal.
With 13 minutes remaining in the match, Alexander scored his 2nd goal of the game as he chipped the ball over the Becker keeper to knot the score up at 3. Pat Somma (Windham, ME) assisted on the goal. On the play Becker goalie Aaron Fill (Ladner, BC) was hurt and replaced by Christopher Nosek (Lancaster, MA). Becker answered again scoring with 4 minutes left in the contest when DeBrito finished off his 2nd goal of the match off a cross from Samura. The DeBrito goal, which was the Hawks’ third goal of the half, proved to be the game winner in a match that featured 7 goals.
Next up for the Mariners is a home game against Thomas College on Wednesday October 3rd at 5pm. This is a makeup match from the postponed game last week. Becker will play again on October 3rd when they host UMass Boston.
