Chris Murphy
Head Coach
Mariner Head Coach Chris Murphy is entering his seventeenth year leading the Maine Maritime Men’s Basketball team. During his tenure here at MMA, Coach Murphy has amassed a 150-202 record (166-214 overall as a head coach), led the team to a North Atlantic Conference championship in 1999-2000 and to the conference championship game in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Coach Murphy was named the NAC Co-Coach of the Year in the 2001-02 and 2007-08 seasons.
In the nine years of the NAC existence the Mariners have qualified for the NAC tournament eight times. Murphy has coached three “NAC Players of the Year”, eight All-NAC 1st Team selections, two 1st Team "All Maine" players, one Maine "Player of the Year", and two NCAA Division III national rebounding champions. Two of his players have gone on to play professionally overseas. From 2000-2004 the Mariners were consistently ranked among the top five teams in the state of Maine. Under Murphy’s direction the Mariners have annually been ranked among the top NCAA Division III teams in FG% defense.
A native of Searsport, Maine, Chris Murphy graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1973 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and received a Master’s degree in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama in 1991. Prior to arriving at Maine Maritime, he was an assistant coach at Colby College for five seasons, an assistant at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa for one season, served as an intern for one season with the 1991 Sunbelt Conference champion University of South Alabama, and was the head coach at Hawthorne College for one season where his team had a 16-12 record and qualified for the NAIA District 5 Tournament.
Intense on the sidelines, Coach Murphy expects his players to put in a maximum effort every time they step on the floor. His teams’ style of play is best described as being “as up-tempo as possible while still being effective”. A true advocate of the values of athletics in helping to produce quality people, students, and athletes, Coach Murphy believes that participation in Division III sports allows each individual a tremendous opportunity to have a great all-around experience while in college and, at the same time, prepare themselves to be positive role models and lead productive lives. He says, “I place the highest priority on academics with a sincere belief that excellence in athletics can be achieved without sacrificing academic ideals.” With almost a quarter of a century of coaching experience at different collegiate levels, Coach Murphy also believes that "compared to any other school I have been associated with, the student-athletes who choose to attend MMA receive by far the best career preparation skills”.
