Mariners use second half surge to defeat UMPI 78-68

Castine, Maine --- The Maine Maritime Men’s basketball team outscored the UMPI Owls 58-37 in the second half to overcome a slow start and beat the visitors from UMaine Presque Isle 78-68 in a non-conference game Friday night.

The Mariners shot 56% from the floor in the second stanza and connected on 6-of-9 threes to secure the win. MMA overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to improve to 4-6 overall heading into conference play while the Owls slip to 0-7 on the season.

Freshman Ben Russell (Farmington, ME) led the Mariner attack with 21 points (15 in the 2nd half) while Sam Bell (Calais, ME) added 19 points and a team high eight assists. Tyler Pineo (Corinth, ME) scored 11 points and senior Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) chipped in with 10 points and a team high nine boards.

Devon Peaslee (Woolwich, ME) and Ray Mitchell (Cleveland, OH) led the Owls with 16 points apiece. Kyle Corrigan (Caribou, ME) played well scoring 11 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a team high five assists. Chris Coffin (Presque Isle, ME) grabbed a team high 11 rebounds.
