Mariners Fall To Gordon
WENHAM, MA. -- 5 Gordon players reached double figures as Gordon cruised to victory, 91-59 over visiting Maine Maritime Academy, in the first round of the Gordon TIpoff Classic. The Scots were led by Greg Walker who had 15, while Aaron Trigg added 10, Brady Bajema had 11, and Ben Gaskill and Scott Nelson chipped in 10 apiece.
WIth the win, Gordon advances to the finals of the Tipoff Classic, where they will face Westfield State at 8PM on Saturday night. The Owls knocked off Baruch 81-77, earlier in the day.
The Scots took control early, running out to a 19-6 lead in the first 5:20 of the contest. The Scots enjoyed excellent outside shooting, going 12 of 23 from behind the arc. Brady Bajema nailed 3 3-pointers and Scott Nelson, Austin Bentson, and Aaron Trigg each netted 2 treys apiece.
With the big early lead Head Coach Tod Murphy had ample opportunity to utilize his bench, as 13 different players had at least a basket for Gordon. The taller Scots also enjoyed a 41-30 advantage on the boards. Ben Gaskill led all players with 9 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action.
Although Gordon's vaunted senior backcourt did not see its usual playing time, Trigg and Bajema were efficient offensively, as the duo hit 8 of 12 shots, and combined for 23 points and 9 assists. Bajema exploded for 8 consecuitve points in just of a minute and a half midway through the first half, much to the delight of the raucous Gordon crowd.
The Mariners were led by Jarred Sternbergh, who chipped in 15 points and Shawn Dostie who had 6 points 5 rebounds and 3 blocks against the much taller Gordon front line.
Maine Maritime Academy (1-1) will play tomorrow at 6PM against Baruch, in the 3rd place game of the TIpoff Classic.
