SHERMAN HAS 22 POINTS TO LIFT COLBY MEN’S BASKETBALL PAST MAINE MARITIME
WATERVILLE, Maine --- Justin Sherman (Piedmont, Calif.) scored a collegiate-high 22 points, including 15 in the opening half, as the Colby College men’s basketball team came off a long break with a 70-52 non-conference win over Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Despite Colby last playing a game on December 6, Sherman shined after the month off with 8-for-12 shooting from the field, 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and 4-for-5 from the foul line.
Colby moved to 7-3 heading into Thursday’s 7 p.m. game at Husson College. Maine Maritime fell to 3-7.
Michael Russell (Wellesley, Mass.) added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Mules, who had just three turnovers in the opening half in taking a 38-27 lead. Gil Haylon (Wellesley, Mass.) pumped in four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points, while Christian Van Loenen (Falmouth, Maine) added five points and a game-high five assists.
Derek DiFrederico (Millinocket, Maine) led the Mariners with 16 points, including an 8-for-9 effort from the foul line. Paul Campbell (Camden, Maine) came off the bench to add 15 points, while Jake Manner (Frankfort, Maine) scored six points and had seven rebounds.
The Mules led just 25-22 with 5:46 to play in the opening half, but Colby used a 13-5 run the rest of the way to take the 38-27 margin at intermission. Sherman and Russell combined for 25 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Colby scored the opening seven points of the second half to take control for good at 45-27. The Mariners got as close as 62-49 with 3:57 to play, but Haylon nailed a 3-point shot with 3:36 to go to stop any thought of a comeback.
