St. Joe's out runs Mariners 83-57
Castine, Maine - The St. Joseph's College Monks won their first game of the season beating the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 83-57 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup of the two Maine schools. The Monks placed five players in double figures and were paced by senior Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) who scored a team high 17 points.
The Monks got off to a fast start and just minutes into the game, they established a double digit lead. MMA kept the game within reach until a decisive run in the last two minutes of the half when the Monks pushed the lead to 20 points going into the break.
Ray Eatmon (Huntington, NY) led the Monks with 6 rebounds, while Murphy contributed 5 boards and 4 assists. Senior point guard Scot Vachon (Schenectady, NY) led the team with 5 assists. St. Joe's shot 51% for the game and out rebounded MMA 35 to 27.
The Mariners were led by Derek DiFrederico (Millinocket, ME), scoring 21 points on 8 for 16 shooting. Jarred Sternbergh (Jonesboro, ME) was the only other MMA player in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. Jake Manner (Frankfort, ME) led MMA with 9 rebounds.
With the loss, MMA drops to 1-1 on the season, while St. Joe's goes to 1-0. MMA will be back in action on Friday when they play California Maritime in Vallejo, California. St. Joe's is back on the court Saturday when they travel to UNE for a 2pm tip-off.
