MMA Cager Receives Leadership Award

Castine, Maine – Maine Maritime sophomore basketball player Jarred Sternbergh has excelled on the court for the past two seasons and now he is being recognized for his contributions to the MMA community. At the recent Regimental Awards Night banquet, Sternbergh was awarded the Rear Admiral Warren C. Hamm, Jr. Leadership Award, which is given annually to a 3/C midshipman in good academic standing who exemplifies outstanding traits of leadership, accountability and loyalty.

A 2006 graduate of Washington Academy, Sternbergh has played for the Mariner basketball team for the past two seasons while maintaining a heavy workload off the court. He is the current vice chairman of the MMA National Debutante Cotillion Ball, president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), vice president of Team Development for Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), and was awarded 3/C Honor Midshipman training officer for the fall of 2007. The International Business and Logistics major has been named to the dean’s list every semester since his arrival at MMA.

The Rear Admiral Warren C. Hamm, Jr. Leadership Award is one of the highest honors an underclass student in the regiment can receive while at Maine Maritime. Rear Admiral Warren C. Hamm, Jr. (Class of 1949) whose distinguished career in the United States Navy spanned 37 years, was the first Maine Maritime Academy graduate to achieve the rank of Rear Admiral. In addition to his four ship commands, two of which were flag seas commands, the governments of the United States, Korea, Portugal, and Vietnam have all decorated him. A former president of both the MMA Alumni Association and the National Council of Maritime Academy Alumni Associations, he is also the recipient of the American Legion Maine Maritime Achievement Award. Throughout his career, he has led by example and shown steadfast loyalty to both his superiors and those under his command.

MMA men’s basketball coach Chris Murphy states “Of all the young men I have coached in my 23 years at the college level, no one has taken better advantage of all the opportunities the college experience has to offer than Jarred Sternbergh”. Jarred in admired by his teammates, peers and staff at MMA for his tireless work ethic, passion, and commitment to the values of Maine Maritime Academy.
