Bowdoin Cruises to victory over Maine Maritime

Castine, Maine - The Bowdoin Polar Bears won their fifth game of the season against Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday night 78-42. Bowdoin held MMA to a season low 42 points and 29% shooting on the way to an impressive non-conference victory.

Andrew Sargeantson (New Canaan, CT) led the Polar Bears with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Jackson (Acton, MA) scored 14, Andrew Hippert (Worcester, MA) scored 12, and Jordan Fliegel (Cambridge, MA) scored 11 points in the win. Bowdoin shot 51% from the field on the evening and out-rebounded the Mariners 43-27.

Maine Maritime, who was playing with out their leading scorer Derek DiFrederico, was led by Bryant Ciomei (Stonington, ME) and Neil Stewart (Rangeley, ME) each scoring 7 points on the evening. Stewart also had 7 rebounds on the night, while Adam Haskell contributed 6 boards in the loss. MMA had 17 turnovers and only 7 assists on the evening en route to the loss.

With the score tied 4-4 early in the first half, the Polar Bears outscored MMA 31-6 over the next 17 minutes to take a 35-6 lead with 40 seconds left in the half. MMA was held scoreless for an eight-minute stretch but managed to score the last four points of the half to go into the break down 35-14. Kyle Jackson (Acton, MA) had 12 points to the lead Bowdoin in the 1st half while Andrew Hippert (Worcester, MA) scored 10 points. The Mariners were led by Jake Manner (Frankfort, ME) and Neil Stewart (Rangeley, ME), each scoring four points in the half.

Maine Maritime played much better in the second half but was still out scored 43-28. Sargeantson had 11 points and 4 rebounds in only 9 minutes of play, while Darian Reid-Sturgis contributed all of his eight points in the second half. MMA got 5 points from Ciomei and Michael Wharff (Sangerville, ME) to lead the team. The Mariners shot 39% from the floor in the second half.

With the win, Bowdoin improves to 5-2 on the year while MMA drops to 1-4. Maine Maritime will be back in action on Saturday when they host conference rival Thomas College at 2pm. Bowdoin will be back on the court Thursday when they host Colby Sawyer at 5:30pm.
