Mariners move on to NAC Semifinals with 12-5 win over Thomas
Freshman Brian Corain collects 6 points in the victory
Castine, Maine -- Freshman attacker Brian Corain (Berwick, ME) had a 6 point afternoon as the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners beat the Thomas College Terriers 12-5 in a North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal men’s lacrosse game played Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
With the victory, MMA improves to 8-3 while Thomas ends their season at 4-7. MMA will move on and play the winner of the Mount Ida and Husson matchup in the semifinals on Wednesday.
Thomas College got on the board first when Jeremy Parmley (Eliot, ME) scored an unassisted goal 2-minutes into the contest taking a 1-0 lead. MMA answered seconds later tying the score at 1-1, when Chris Keiley (Holliston, MA) scored off of an assist from Brian Corain (Berwick, ME), tucking the ball over the shoulder of the Thomas goalie.
MMA took the 2-1 advantage at the 6:59 mark of the 1st quarter when Keiley found Garrett Lake who blasted it into the top right corner for the man down score. The Mariners scored again 3-minutes later when Mike Vangelist (Sanford, ME) stole a pass at midfield and found Garrett Lake for his second score of the game taking a 3-1 advantage. The Mariners closed out the quarter with a Chris Keiley goal grabbing a 4-1 lead at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.
MMA took a 5-1 lead with 5:42 to play in the 2nd quarter, when Keiley found the back of the net for his second goal of the day. Brian Corain assisted on the goal. The Terriers inched closer at 5-2 when TJ Collins (East Bridgewater, MA) scored off of a Justin Lawler (Oakland, ME) pass with 2:58 left in the 2nd quarter. Thomas scored again with 1:26 left in the 2nd, when Luke Collier (Sidney, ME) received a pass from Lawler and shot it over the stick of the MMA goalie moving the Terriers within 2 goals at 5-3.
Thomas opened the scoring in the 3rd with an unassisted goal from Kolby Peckham (West Gardiner, ME), pulling the Terriers within one goal at 5-4. MMA answered less than a minute later when Brian Corain found Garrett Lake, pushing the gap back to two goals at 6-4. Both teams exchanged goals as Nick Lund (Alfred, ME) scored for MMA and Luke Collier scored for Thomas bringing the score to 7-5. Ryan Williams (Cumberland, ME) put the Mariners up 8-5 with just 4 seconds left in the 3rd when he gathered a pass from Wade Mondoux (Berwick, ME) and shot the ball from 20 yards out for the score.
The Mariners opened up the scoring in the 4th when Chris Keiley found Brian Corain for his second goal of the afternoon increasing the lead to 9-5. This was the third time on the day this combo combined for a goal.
MMA increased the lead to 10-5 when Nick Lund scored his 2nd goal of the day off of a pass from Brian Corain. The Mariners scored again when Chris Keiley deflected and shot from Ryan Williams into the top corner of the net giving MMA the 6-goal cushion at 11-5. Brian Corain ended the scoring on the day putting the Mariners up 12-5 after connecting on a pass from Nick Lund.
MMA (8-3,7-2 NAC) got 4 goals from sophomore Chris Keiley and 3 goals from senior Garrett Lake. Brian Corain collected 2 goals to go along with his 4 assists while Nick Lund added 2 goals and an assist. The Mariners had 11 assists in their 12 goals. Daniel Redmond (Westbrook, ME) made 20 saves for the Mariners on 45 Thomas shots picking up his school record 8th win of the year. Peter Betti (Upper Saddle River, NJ) led the Mariners with 9 ground balls in the game.
For Thomas College (4-7, 3-6 NAC), Kolby Peckham, Luke Collier, Justin Lawler, Jeremy Parmley, and TJ Collins all had a goal in the game while Collier and Lawler each added an assist. Kevin Averill (New Sharon, ME) led Thomas with 9 ground balls while goalie Josh Colello (Yarmouth, ME) made 18 saves in the loss.
