Mariners Pull Away For 8-3 Win Over Johnson
Maine Maritime breaks school record for wins in a season, grabs 3rd seed from Badgers
JOHNSON, Vt. (April 22, 2009) In a battle for third-place in the final North Atlantic Conference regular-season standings, visiting Maine Maritime Academy defeated Johnson State College 8-3 in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday at Minaert Field. The Mariners (7-3, 7-2 NAC) were fueled by a 69-55 groundball advantage and used a stingy defensive effort to stiffle the Badgers (6-4, 6-3 NAC) offense.
Johnson struck first at the 11:31 mark of the first period when Josh Bossin (Sharon, Mass./Sharon) broke down the middle of the field, drew a MMA defenseman and dropped a pass to the right to the streaking Steve Noyes (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) who beat Mariner keeper Dan Redmond (Westbrook, Maine) to make it 1-0. But goals by MMA's Garret Lake (Farmington, Maine) and Brian Corain (Berwick, Maine) would give the visitors the 2-1 lead after one.
JSC's Billy Noyes (Boston, Mass./Northeast Regional) and MMA's Todd Murphy (Middlesex, Vt.) would each score their team's loan goal of the second period as the score was 2-1 at halftime. Maine Maritime dominated the groundball action in the first half out doing the Badgers 45-25 in the first 30 minutes.
The Mariner defense would rule the third holding Johnson State scoreless with the Badgers getting off only seven shots with one of those on goal. Chris Keiley (Holliston, Mass.) sparked the offense by scoring two goals in the period to give MMA the 5-2 lead after three periods.
Another Keiley goal at the 7:19 mark of the fourth gave MMA a 6-2 lead and then Lake goal shortly after pushed it to 7-2 with 6:44 to play. Billy Noyes' second goal of the day off a Steve Noyes feed gave the Badgers life at the 2:28 mark but Lake's third goal of the day at 1:38 remaining sealed the contest.
The loss for Johnson comes despite a fine effort by goalkeeper Branden Sawyer (East Greenwich, R.I./Greenwich) who made 15 saves in the game while Redmond had a strong fourth period making four saves and stopping eight shots for the game.
The win gives Maine Maritime the #3 seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament while Johnson will play at the #4 spot and host the #5 seed in the NAC Quarterfinals on Saturday, April 25 at 2:00 pm.
