Southern Maine explodes for six fourth quarter goals to beat MMA 11-5
Castine, Maine Preston Gilbert (Saco, ME) scored two goals and dished out three assists as the University of Southern Maine Huskies pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 11-5 win over the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game played Wednesday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
USM had a 3-2 lead at the half and a 5-4 lead after three quarters before scoring six fourth quarter goals and pulling away from MMA and securing the victory. The game was close throughout the first 48 minutes and tied at 5-5 with 13:48 left in the match before USM rattled off six straight tallies. Wade Mondoux (North Berwick, ME) put home the first goal of the third period to tie the game at 3-3. USM answered 17 seconds later when Matt Soule (Denmark, ME) scored to put the Huskies back on top 4-3. Less than a minute later Mariner attacker Garrett Lake (pictured above) scored the equalizer off of a pass from Peter Betti (Upper Saddle River, NJ). The score remained tied at four until USM attacker Lee Gauthier (Berwick, ME) found the back of the net with 20 seconds left in the third on a nifty feed from Gilbert.
MMA midfielder Todd Murphy (Middlesex, ME) opened the fourth-quarter scoring to even the score at 5-5, but the Huskies would respond by scoring the next four goals in a 1:20 span and put the Mariners away. Preston Gilbert capped off a great afternoon when he scored the game-winning goal at the 12:01 mark to give USM the 6-5 lead. The Huskies got five goals from five different players to end the quarter and get the 11-5 win.
Wade Mondoux and Todd Murphy had two goals apiece on the afternoon while senior Garrett Lake contributed a goal and three assists for the Mariners. Goalie Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, ME) stopped eight shots in the loss and dropped to 3-3 on the season.
For Southern Maine (2-4), Preston Gilbert finished with a game-high five points. Lee Gauthier, Alex Pleau (Lewiston, ME), Josh Reinhold (Tampa, FL), and Matt Soule all finished with two goals on the day. James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, NY) came up with 10 saves in the victory.
The Mariners' (3-3) return to action Saturday when they travel to Castleton State College at 11:00 a.m. Next up for the Huskies will be an away match versus Western Connecticut State College on Saturday.
