Mariners lose 11-10 in Double Overtime to Johnson State
Johnson State attacker Billy Noyes scores five times to lead JSC
Castine, Maine -- Christopher Keiley ’11 (Holliston, ME) scored four goals and dished out two assists, but it wasn’t enough as the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners lost a hard-fought 10-11 double-overtime match to Johnson State College Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
MMA dominated play early on and had a 3-1 lead after a period. MMA took a commanding 8-3 lead on Chris Keiley’s (Holliston, MA) fourth goal of the half, but the Badgers answered by scoring the last two goals of the second period and closing the gap to 8-5. MMA increased the lead in the third quarter to 10-5 when Wade Mondoux (North Berwick, ME) scored his second goal of the match but that would be the last goal the Mariners would score as they finished the last 27 minutes of the match without a score.
Johnson State midfielder Kegan Pettit (Freeport, ME) opened the fourth-quarter scoring to cut the Mariners’ lead to 10-7, and the Badgers finished off the fourth with two goals in the last 1:30 to even the score at 10 and push the match into overtime. The Badgers dominated the play in both overtimes, and with 1:06 left on the clock in the second overtime, Mike Murphy (Woodstock, VT) found the back of the net for the game winner.
Chris Keiley continued his stellar play for MMA scoring four goals and dishing out 2 assists, while Wade Mondoux tallied two goals of his own. Four other players contributed goals for the Mariners, while Phil McNerney (pictured above) had 3 assists to go along with a goal on the afternoon. Goalie Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, ME) made 11 saves in the losing effort.
For Johnson State (2-0, 2-0 NAC), Billy Noyes (Boston, MA) finished with a game-high five goals and an assist. Erik Tillberg (Randolph, Vt) played well scoring two goals and collecting two assists while Matt Martin (Vergennes, VT) added a goal and an assist in the match. Evan Pestone (Cohasset, MA) came up with 15 saves in the win.
