Maine Maritime Uses Final Seconds To Tip Daniel Webster in OT, 6-5
Nashua, NH - In a contest that saw a number of last minute scores, Josh McCallister's last-second shot was the one that made all the difference. McAllister's (Weare, N.H.) unassisted score with 55 seconds remaining in overtime capped what turned out to be a wild ending to a low-scoring affair as Maine Maritime tipped host Daniel Webster, 6-5 in North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday at Eagle Field.
McAllister's game-winner came on the heels of Garrett Lake's (Farmington, Maine) dramatic game-tying score with just six seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session. Lake's clock-beater came on the heels of Eagle Brian Abrahamson's (Dedham, Mass.) score with 1:56 to play that had given the hosts a 5-4 lead. Four goals came in the final minute of quarterly play in the game, with the Eagles twice scoring with 38 seconds left in both the second and third quarters.
The win evened the Mariners' record at 5-5 overall (3-3 NAC), while Daniel Webster dropped to 3-6 overall (0-5 NAC). Lake finished with two goals and an assist on the afternoon to lead MMA, while Abrahamson's two scores and assist paced the Eagles.
After two teams traded scores in the first period, the Eagles jumped ahead on two goals from Dan Boudreau (Chelmsford, Mass.) with 10:12 and 38 seconds to go in the second to take a 3-1 halftime lead. Lake converted a Phillip McNerney (Elliott, Maine) pass with 3:12 to go in the third and T. Murphy followed just 23 seconds later to tie it, before Colby Field put the Eagles back up, 4-3 with an unassisted score with 38 ticks to go in the quarter. Lake found Chris Keiley (Holliston, Mass.) for the third tie of the game with 12:31 to play, before the wild finish in the final two minutes and the overtime winner.
Remarkably, Daniel Webster went the entire contest without a penalty, while Maine Maritime was whistled just twice. Chris Leyland (New Hope, Penn.) finished with 10 saves for Daniel Webster, while Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, Maine) stopped nine shots for the Mariners.
Daniel Webster is back in action Saturday at Thomas for a Noon start, while Maine Maritime hosts Emerson Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
