Chris McKenney
Head Coach
Chris McKenney enters his seventh season at the helm of Maine Maritime Academy Football, and his 23rd season of coaching at the college level. A native of Dover, NH, McKenney lettered in football, basketball, and track at Dover High School. McKenney earned his Bachelor’s Degree in physical education and a Master’s Degree in athletic administration at Springfield College. He was a four-year performer at the linebacker position for the Pride.
McKenney coached for two years at Springfield after graduating in 1984. He then went on to coaching stints at Northeastern University as Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach, and at Norwich University where he served as Defensive Line Coach, physical education instructor, and Head Track Coach.
McKenney returned to his alma mater in 1991 as the Offensive Coordinator and assistant professor in physical education. Under the direction of McKenney, Springfield became the premier running attack in NCAA Division III. Springfield’s offense became the first ever to compile 4,000 yards rushing in one season, setting an NCAA record with 4,275 yards. In 2000, the Pride recorded the most wins in school history and a trip to the final eight of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest for any New England school. During McKenney’s ten years at Springfield College, the offense set numerous school and conference records. His players received many individual honors such as All-Conference, All-America, Player of the Year, and Academic All-America.
Over the past six seasons at Maine Maritime, McKenney has strengthened the numbers in the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes. His young teams have brought much excitement to Ritchie Field. Many individual players have received honors, including Academic All-Conference players, NEFC Rookie of the Year, NEFC and ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, and numerous Weekly Honor Roll and Players of the Week. In 2003 McKenney guided the Mariner offense to a #5 national ranking in rushing, while also setting a school record for the most rushing yards gained in a season (2,872). The 2003 Mariners also set a record for total offense in a season with 3,656 yards. The past two seasons, the Mariners have compiled a 13-5 regular season record in the NEFC (the largest conference in the nation), along with a trip to the ECAC North Atlantic Championship against Alfred University
Coach McKenney explains, “I was attracted to Maine Maritime Academy by its academic reputation and job placement record. We are thrilled with the brand new and state of the art playing surface installed on Ritchie Field in 2006, and our returning players are eager to work with this year’s freshmen who are equally excited about playing for and attending Maine Maritime Academy. Our program achieved measurable success last season going 6-3 overall, and 5-2 in the Bogan Division of the NEFC. We are all excited about the upcoming 2007 season, and hope to build on the progress made over the last couple of years.”
Lou Conte
Assistant Coach
In his third season at Maine Maritime Academy, Coach Conte is responsible for coaching the offensive line and special teams, along with coordinating recruiting and fund-raising efforts. He is also facilities manager of the athletic department and runs the intramural programs at MMA
Lou graduated from Springfield College in 2005 with his Bachelor's Degree in physical education. While playing NCAA Division III football at Springfield, Lou was a three-year letter winner, and he helped the Pride become FFC Conference Champions in 2002 and 2003. He also helped them attain an NCAA East Regional #1 Ranking in 2003, which included the first undefeated team at Springfield since the 1969 season. His 2004 team attained a #4 National Ranking, and become the ECAC North Atlantic Champions.
Coach Conte is also the head coach of the Mariner Lacrosse team. In his first two seasons he has compiled a 10-10 overall record with an appearance in the NAC playoffs in 2006. He is also a member of the NCAA Division III Regional Advisory Committee for the North Region, which selects teams for the Division III National Lacrosse tournament.
