Chris McKenney
Head Coach
Chris McKenney enters his ninth season as head coach of the Maine Maritime Academy football team, and his 26th season of coaching at the college level.
McKenney, a native of Dover, NH, was recently inducted into the Dover Sports Hall of Fame. McKenney received his Bachelors degree in Physical Education, 1984, and his Master’s degree in Athletic Administration, 1986, at Springfield College. He was a three-year starter and a four-year letter winner at linebacker.
Over the past eight seasons at Maine maritime, McKenney’s teams have brought much excitement to Ritchie Field. McKenney has been named NEFC Coach of the Year in 2005 and NEFC Bogan Division Coach of the Year in 2006, and again in 2008. Many of McKenney’s players have received honors, including Academic All-Conference, NEFC Rookie of the Year, NEFC Offensive/Defensive Player of the Year, ECAC Player of the Year, and two players in the last four years have been named Greater Boston Gridiron Club Division II/III Player of the Year.
In 2008 the Mariners captured the Bogan Division title and hosted the Conference Championship game. Along the way, the Mariners established 23 records, including total offense (4,727), points (419), touchdowns (62), and rushing yards (4,050).
The past four seasons, the Mariners have compiled an impressive 25-12 (.680 winning percentage) regular season record in the NEFC (largest conference in the nation), a Bogan Division title 2008 and a trip to the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl Championship in 2005.
McKenney’s coaching career began at his alma mater in 1984 as a graduate assistant. McKenney then went on to coaching stints at Northeastern University as Special Teams Coordinator and D-line coach, and at Norwich University where he served as Defensive Line Coach and Head Track Coach.
McKenney returned to his alma mater in 1991 as the Offensive Coordinator and assistant professor in physical education. Under the direction of McKenney, Springfield became the premier running attack in NCAA Division III. Springfield’s offense became the first ever to compile 4,000 yards rushing in one season, setting an NCAA record with 4,275 yards. In 2000, the Pride recorded the most wins in school history and a trip to the final eight of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest for any New England school. During McKenney’s ten years at Springfield College, the offense set numerous school and conference records. His players received many individual honors such as All-Conference, All-America, Player of the Year, and Academic All-America.
Coach McKenney explains, “players are attracted to Maine Maritime Academy by its academic reputation, job placement record and salaries. We are thrilled with our new and state of the art playing surface on Ritchie Field in 2006 and our brand new grandstands and press box added in 2009. Our returning players are eager to work with this year’s freshmen who are equally excited about attending and playing for Maine Maritime. Our program has achieved measurable success with four straight winning seasons and five straight Admiral’s Cups. We are all excited about the upcoming 2009 season and look to build on our recent success.”
