Maine Maritime Running Back Jim Bower Honored by New England Football Writers Association
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Maine Maritime’s Jim Bower received the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Awards for week 12 of the 2009 football season.
Brusko, a senior utility player from Zionsville, Pa., is the second player from Maine to win the Gold Helmet award in as many weeks. Brusko, who has seen time at quarterback, wide receiver, punter and on the kick
coverage units, lined up at wide receiver and made 14 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in the Black Bears’ 27-24 loss to New Hampshire. The senior also served as the Black Bears’ punter and booted five punts in the game for 195 yards, pinning the Wildcats inside their own 20-yard line three times. Brusko opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown reception less than five minutes into the game.
Bower, a senior fullback out of South Paris, Maine, rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in Maine Maritime’s NCAA Division III first round 38-22 loss to Montclair State. Bower averaged 5.5 yards per carry in the game. With the Mariners trailing 38-14 late in the second-half, Bower scampered into the endzone from two yards out and also carried the ball into the end zone to convert the two-point conversion to make the score 38-22.
