Mariners Gain 615 Offensive Yards, Beat WNEC 41-21
Castine, ME Senior fullback back Jim Bower (South Paris, ME) ran for 165 yards while senior quarterback Tyler Angell threw for 150 yards propelling Maine Maritime to a 41-21 victory Saturday afternoon (Sept. 19) over Western New England College in a non-division New England Football Conference (NEFC) contest.
The Mariners, who have scored 103 points in their two wins, are now 2-0 while the Golden Bears dropped to 1-2 following their road defeat.
Maine Maritime took a 6-0 lead just 8:26 into the opening period on a long 13 play, 63-yard drive. The drive was capped off by a Tyler Angell (Leeds, ME) (10 carries, 26 yards) 1-yard run.
Western New England College got on the board late in the first quarter when senior quarterback Justin Walz (Groton, CT) tossed a thirteen-yard scoring pass to sophomore receiver Kenny Muhlack (Groton, CT) (4 catches, 56 yards) to make the score 7-6 with 2:12 left in the first quarter.
Walz completed 15-of-27 passes for 142 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
The home team took the lead for good (21-7) on two second quarter touchdown runs by Jim Bower who punched the ball in from five and three yards out just minutes apart.
Western New England College closed the gap to 21-14 when Mike Graham (Norwalk, CT) (11 carries for 169 yards) ran a kickoff back 85-yards for the score. The Mariners quickly answered, scoring four minutes later when junior Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) ran the ball in from 12-yards out to take a 27-14 lead going into the half.
The Mariners scored the only touchdown of the third quarter when Nick Bourassa (Jay, ME) (11 carries for 56 yards) had a 9-yard touchdown run.
Both teams exchanged scores in the fourth quarter to bring the final tally to 41-21. MMA sophomore receiver Nate Duford (Claremont, NH) caught an 88-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Matthew Rende (Augusta, ME) to close out the scoring for MMA. WNEC capped the day with an 8-play, 78-yard drive, which featured an 8-yard touchdown run by Mike Graham.
Western New England College compiled 365 yards while the Mariners’ option attack totaled 615 yards, including 377 on the ground.
The game featured seven turnovers, but only one of them led to points for the recovering team.
WNEC junior defensive back Pat Lesko (Seymour, CT) had 11.5 tackles while junior linebacker Justin Bailey (Northboro, MA) had 11 tackles. Dave McCarten (Little Compton, RI) had an interception for WNEC while William Grenger (Hazlet, NJ) and Nate Kuzmeski (Tolland, CT) each had fumble recoveries.
Travis Fergola (Mexico, ME) (8.5 tackles) led a stingy MMA defense, which had two interceptions and three sacks.
