Mariners Sail Past Hawks 62-39

Bourassa and Bower Combine for 334 Yards and 4 Touchdowns

Leicester, Mass.-  Maine Maritime had over 500 rushing yards on their way to a 62-39 win over Becker College.

The Hawks jumped out to 3-0 lead when Melvin Mah (Lowell, Mass.) nailed a 47 yard field goal. The Hawks lead was short lived, as the Mariners marched down the field in 1:30. The drive was capped off by a Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) 18 yard touchdown run. The Mariners extra point attempt was block, making the score 6-3. Melvin Mah hit his 2nd field goal of the game from 28 yards out, making the score 6-6 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Mariners made the score 14-6 on when Tyler Angell (Leeds, ME) connected with Nate Duford (Claremont, NH) on a 25 yard touchdown pass. The pass attempt was the only one of the game for Maine Maritime. The Mariners increased their lead to 21-6 when Jim Bower (South Paris, ME) scampered in from 5 yards out for the first of three touchdowns he scored on the day.

The Hawks refused to back down, as Robert Baker (Monroe, Conn.) hit Ryan Mercado (New London, Conn.) on an 18 yard touchdown pass. The excitement was short lived as the Mariners went 42 yards in 00:28, making the score 28-13. The drive was finished off with a Jim Bower 17 yard touchdown.

In the 3rd quarter the Mariners scored the only points on an 82 yard touchdown run from Nick Bourassa (Jay, ME), making the score 35-13.

At the start of the 4th quarter, Ryan Mercado caught his 2nd touchdown of the day on a 3 yard pass from Robert Baker. Once again the Mariners answered right back 31 seconds later on 8 yard touchdown run from Todd Murphy, making the score42-20.  The two teams exchanged touchdowns 3 more times before the clock expired.

Nick Bourassa and Jim Bower combined for 334 rushing yards on 29 carries to lead the Mariners offensive attack. The Maritime defense was anchored Travis Fergola (Mexico, ME) with 8 tackles.  Maine Maritime improved to 1-0 on the season.  The Mariners will host Western New England at 1pm next Saturday.

Jimmy Chery (Malden, Mass.) ran for 73 yards to carry the Hawks rushing attack. Allan Britton (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in with 2 rushing touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Robert Baker passed for 272 yards and threw 3 touchdown passes. Ryan Grillo (Waterford, Conn.) and Ryan Mercado combined for 132 receiving yards. Jake Bateman (New Bedford, Mass.) led the Hawks defense with 9 tackles. John Dutchick (Vernon, NY) added 6 tackles and a forced fumble in a losing effort. Becker fell to 0-2 on the season. The Hawks will host WPI next Saturday at 2:30 at Alumni Field.
