2008 Preview

The Mariners 2007 season saw some highs and lows. Six Mariners made the All Division team along with the NEFC Defensive Player of the Year honors going to Chris Tracey. The Mariners completed their third straight winning season and captured a fourth straight Admiral’s Cup. But Inconsistencies in all three phases of the game had the Mariners finishing in third place of the always competitive Bogan Division.

In 2008, the Mariners look for the returning players to bring more consistency to the field, as they strive for a fourth straight winning season and division title. There are key division games early on with Bridgewater, Westfield, and Worcester State that will test the Mariners. In all, a tough ten game schedule with six home games await the Mariners in 2008.

The defense returns seven starters from the 2007 season, led by Captains Cody Andrews (All Division), Chris Kates, and Travis Fergola. Experienced Defensive End Steve Keroack (SR) will anchor the defensive line with Andrews, while Junior corners Robbie Leighton (six interceptions) and Mike Riley will keep the opponents passing game at bay along with Chris Kates. Wade Mondoux returns at OLB after a strong freshman season. The Mariners look to stay near the top of the NEFC in rushing defense, points allowed, and total defense.

The offense returns six starters, led by senior guard Chris Mitchell (3 year starter, All Division Guard 07’), Juniors Tyler Angell (QB), Travis Berube (OT), and wide receivers Alex Coulombe and Travis Shaw. Sophomores Josh Elwell and Todd Murphy return from the Mariner backfield and Dan Weamer returns as the center. Game experienced players Eric Shortell (Guard), Vinnie Moulton (RB/FB), Isaac Young (TE/OT) and Mike Secord (OL) look to move into the starting roles.

The Mariners offense will look to control the clock with the running game and look for big play opportunities from the veteran receivers. Spots in the offensive line and fullback will need to be filled with underclassmen or newcomers, but the Mariner offense looks to get back to the top of the conference in rushing and scoring.

It should be another exciting season in 2008 as the Mariners look to retain the Admiral’s Cup and win a Division title.
