Maine Maritime Retains Admirals Cup for Fifth Straight Year

Castine, Maine – Junior running back Jim Bower (South Paris, ME) ran for a game high 212 yards on only 37 carries and two touchdowns, as Maine Maritime improved to 4-3 on the season with a 26-7 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy Saturday afternoon in a Bogan Division New England Football Conference (NEFC) contest. The win marks the 5th straight year that the Mariners have defeated the Buccaneers and retained the coveted Admirals Cup.

The Mariners improve to 3-1 in conference play while the Bears drop to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the Bogan Division of the NEFC. Maine Maritime rushed for 395 yards while Massachusetts Maritime only mustered 167 total yards of offense on the afternoon.

Maine Maritime took a 6-0 lead on their first drive of the game when Tyler Angell (Leeds, ME) (21 rushes for 128 yards) scampered in from 24 yards out to get the Mariners on the board. The drive covered 60 yards on only 6 plays but the extra point was missed.

The game became a defensive battle for the rest of the first half as both teams failed to break the goal line. The remaining 12 possessions of the half resulted in eight punts an interception and three different times the teams turned the ball over on downs.

Maine Maritime defensive back Rob Leighton (Auburn, ME) tied the school record for interceptions in a career (13, Keith Beaulieu) when he picked off a Kyle Moon (Wilmington, MA) pass with :22 seconds left in the second quarter.

The Buccaneers took the lead with their first possession of the second half when Kyle Moon (10 completions for 105 yards and a TD) connected with senior wide receiver Colin Teehan (Plymouth, MA) (3 catches for 44 yards), who made a beautiful catch at the Maine Maritime two-yard line and fought his way into the end zone for the score. The extra point was good by Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, MA) and gave Mass Maritime Academy the 7-6 advantage.

MMA responded less than five minutes later when Tyler Angell ran the ball off the left side for 29-yards and gave Maine Maritime the 12-7 lead. Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) completed the drive with a two-point conversion that upped the Mariners lead to 14-7.

The Maine Maritime defense did their part in the fourth quarter when Wade Mondoux (North Berwick, ME) intercepted at Kyle Moon pass on the Buccaneers 27-yard line. Three plays later Jim Bower bullied his way into the end zone from 13-yards out to push MMA’s lead to 20-7 (extra point failed).

The Mariners’ defense stopped Mass Maritime and once again gave the ball back to the Mariner offense in great field position. Maine Maritime finished off the Buccaneers with another Bower rushing touchdown one minute later from nine yards out and ended the hopes of Mass Maritime capturing the Admirals Cup. The two-point conversion attempt failed and Maine Maritime held the 26-7 advantage with just three minutes left in the game.

Maine Maritime Academy compiled all of their 395 offensive yards on the ground while the Mariner defense limited the Buccaneers to 62 yards rushing and 167 yards passing on the day.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy defense held Maine Maritime to it’s lowest point total of the year at 26 points and had impressive outings by Andy Hirko (Uxbridge, MA) and Jack Gomes (Acushnet, MA). Hirko collected 15 tackles on the day including one for a loss while Gomes had 13 tackles. Joe Loughry (New Freedom, PA) played well in the loss collecting 10 tackles.

Maine Maritime linebacker Wade Mondoux had 10 tackles, an interception, and two pass break-ups while Steve Keroack (York, ME) had seven tackles (5 for loss) and a sack on the afternoon. Joel Chadbourne (Westbrook, ME) and Cody Andrews (Holden, ME) each played well for the Mariners collecting eight tackles and a sack.
