Maine Maritime Retains Admiral's Cup With 20-18 Win
BUZZARDS BAY, MA. Homecoming turned into a day of missed opportunities for the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers (2-5) as visiting Maine Maritime (4-2) came away with a 20-18 win. This is the first time in the history of the Admiral's Cup that Maine Maritime has won 4 years in a row.
The Buccaneers turned the ball over five times, twice resulting in touchdowns for the Mariners. Maine also lost the ball five times, but for the most part was able to avoid any serious damage.
Maine opened the scoring in the second quarter of the 35th Annual Admiral’s Cup on a 25-yard interception by Rob Leighton (pictured left) that he ran into the left side of the end zone. The Mariners took a 14-0 lead at halftime after Brandon Goodrich (Waterboro, ME.) rumbled 6-yards into the end zone. Chris Cunningham (Round Pond, ME.) added the PAT on both Mariner TD’s.
The Buccaneers answered early in the third quarter with an 11-yard strike from quarterback Joe DeFrank (Morgantown, PA.) to Colin Teehan (South Boston, MA.). With the PAT from Mike Sarapas (Plainville, MA.) the Bucs cut the lead to 14-7.
DeFrank went to the air again to open the fourth quarter hitting Keith Rudolph (New Bedford, MA.) for a 39-yard score, but the extra point sailed wide leaving Maine with a 14-13 edge. Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, MA.) put the Buccaneers on top with 10:41 to play with an 8-yard field goal, but the Mariners bounced right back scoring on a 7-yard run by Goodrich. The Mariners elected to go for 2-points, but fumbled the ball. Kevin McCarthy (Tewksbury, MA.) scooped the ball and ran it the length of the field making the score 20-18.
Goodrich ended the afternoon with 159-yards, while Rudolph led the Bucs with 72-yards all through the air. Combined the Mariners collected 352 offensive yards to 174 for the Buccaneers.
Massachusetts Maritime is on the road next Saturday at Fitchburg State. Maine will host Framingham State.
