Maine Maritime Defeats Framingham State 35-24

Castine, Me. – In New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division action, the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy downed the Rams of Framingham State College, 35-24, this afternoon at Ritchie Field.

The Mariners (5-2, 4-1 NEFC Bogan) forced Framingham State (2-5, 1-4 NEFC Bogan) into 4 turnovers (2 interceptions & 2 fumbles) and sacked the Rams six times on the day. The Mariner defense gave up -2 yards rushing on the afternoon. The MMA defense held the Rams to 216 net yards of total offense while MMA was able to produce 394 total yards (278 rushing) of their own.

Sophomore quarterback Tyler Angell (pictured left) rushed for 136 yards and threw for 140 more yards including two touchdown passes. Vinnie Moulton (Cape Elizabeth, ME) had two rushing touchdowns in the game, while Brandon Goodrich (Waterboro, ME) and Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) each caught a touchdown pass. MMA rushed 64 times for 278 yards in the win.

The Rams jumped out to a quick lead scoring on the 3rd play of the game when Patrick Franey (Lexington, MA) threw a screen pass to Shawn Miller (Tyngsboro, MA) on 3rd and 7, and Miller scampered 65 yards for a touchdown. Ashley Baker (Mansfield, MA) missed the extra point and the score remained 6-0. MMA answered on their first possession of the game driving 57 yards on 7 plays. The drive was capped off by a Josh Elwell (Owlshead, ME) 17-yard touchdown run and Chris Cunningham (Round Pond, ME) converted the extra point for the 7-6 lead. Both teams exchanged 2 possessions and the first quarter ended with MMA leading 7-6.

The Mariners went up 14-6 at the 9:22 mark of the second quarter when Tyler Angell (Leeds, ME) found Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown pass. The 7-play touchdown drive was set up by a Tyler Angell 54 yard run that brought MMA down to the Rams 23 yard line. Two plays later the Mariners scored to take the 8-point lead. The score remained 14-8 going into the half.

Framingham closed the gap to 14-12 at the 12:16 mark of the third quarter when the Rams converted off of a MMA turnover. The Rams punted and during the play the ball bounced off of MMA defensive back Mike Riley (Milton, VT). Anthony Kewley (Rutland, MA) recovered the ball on the Mariner 7-yard line, which set up first and goal for the Rams. After a Wade Mondoux (Berwick, ME) sack, Ram quarterback Patrick Franey found Roland Gervais (Griswold, CT) in the back off the end zone for the 10-yard touchdown pass. The Rams attempted a two-point conversion to tie the score, but Mike Riley broke up the pass to keep the score at 14-12. Once again, MMA answered quickly, scoring on their next possession. Quarterback Tyler Angell found Brandon Goodrich (Waterboro, ME) up the middle of the defense, and Goodrich ran it in for the 29-yard touchdown pass. Cunningham converted the extra point to put MMA up 21-12.

On the next possession, MMA’s Mike Riley recovered a Ram fumble on a fair catch at the Framingham 16-yard line. Five plays later, Vinnie Moulton (Cape Elizabeth, ME) rushed off the right tackle for 5-yards and the score. The touchdown pushed the lead to 28-12. The Mariners increased their lead to 35-12 when Chris Tracy (Westbrook, ME) recovered a Ram fumble and 5 plays later Vinnie Moulton took the ball into the end zone from 1 yard out for his second score of the day.

Framingham State moved closer at the 9:43 mark when the Franey threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to James Hanafin (Burlington, MA). The Franey touchdown pass was his third of the day. The 2-point conversion attempt was intercepted by MMA linebacker Travis Fergola (Mexico, ME), keeping the score at 35-18. The Rams continued to battle and scored again with 3:08 left on the clock when Franey threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day. The pass went for 2-yards to Anthony Kewley and brought the score to 35-24 after the failed point after attempt. The touchdown was set up by a Brandon Kent (Pepperell, MA) interception that brought the ball to the MMA 21-yard line.

The Mariner defense created 4 turnovers and collected 6 sacks. Travis Fergola (Mexico, ME) was outstanding on the afternoon; recording 8 tackles for the Mariners (1 for loss), had one sack and intercepted a two-point conversion attempt in the end zone. Wade Mondoux (Berwick, ME) also played well collecting 8 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 tackles for losses. Junior tackle Steve Keroack (York, ME) made 7 tackles (2 for loss) and also had 2 sacks. Senior free safety Nate Bolduc (Farmington, ME) led MMA with 9 tackles, while senior linebacker Chris Tracy (Westbrook, ME) had 5 tackles (2 for loss) on the afternoon and a fumble recovery. The Mariners had interceptions by Rob Leighton (Auburn, ME) and Mike Riley (Milton, VT).

Sophomore quarterback Patrick Freney led the way offensively for Framingham State as he passed for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Roland Gervais caught 6 balls for 40 yards and a score. James Hanafin had 5 catches for 53 yards and a score in the loss. Anthony Kewley and Shawn Miller also caught touchdown passes on the afternoon. Defensively, freshman defensive back Brent Loveless (Billerica, MA) notched 13 tackles while Joe Miller (Woburn, MA) and Joe Treacy (Wakefield, MA) each recorded 9 tackles. Treacy and Matt McRae (Pembroke, MA) each recovered fumbles in the game.

The Mariners will try to make it five in a row next Saturday as they travel to the United States Coast Guard Academy for a 1:00 pm start. Framingham State hosts Massachusetts Maritime next Saturday at 12:00 pm.
